A quick look at this recipe

  • Recipe Name: Big Mac Bowl
  • Ready In: 25 minutes prep, 10 minutes cook time, 35 minutes total
  • Serves: 4
  • Calories: 594 per serving
  • Main Ingredients: Ground beef, onion, lettuce, tomatoes, American and cheddar cheeses, dill pickles, mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, sour cream
  • Difficulty: Easy

Once a year I treat myself to the classic double cheeseburger with special sauce, fries and a Coke — a nostalgic comfort food I rarely indulge in. To enjoy that flavor more often without the extra carbs, I deconstructed the iconic sandwich and turned it into a bowl. The result keeps the taste you love while adding fresh vegetables and more protein.

For those who enjoy smaller portions, my smaller Big Mac variation and mini cheeseburgers are other good options. This Big Mac Bowl gives you the essence of the original — patties, cheese and special sauce — layered over a big bed of lettuce and bright veggies.

Why you’ll love this Big Mac burger bowl

  • Low carb: Replacing the bun with lettuce reduces carbs while keeping the flavor front and center.
  • Plenty of vegetables: Each bowl is loaded with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles for texture and freshness.
  • Healthier take on a classic: You satisfy your Big Mac craving with fewer refined carbs and more vegetables and protein.

Ingredients for Big Mac in a bowl recipe

Use fresh, high-quality ingredients for best results. Quantities are listed in the recipe card below.

Ingredients for Big Mac bowls including ground beef, onion, American cheese, cherry tomatoes, lettuce and dill pickles.
  • Ground beef: 80/20 is ideal for juicy burger pieces.
  • Finely chopped onion: Melts into the patties and adds savory flavor.
  • Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper
  • Salted butter: For cooking the burgers to enhance richness.
  • American cheese: Melts well and provides that classic cheeseburger taste.
  • Mayonnaise and ketchup: The base of the special sauce.
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Sour cream
  • Chopped iceberg or romaine lettuce
  • Chopped dill pickles
  • Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • Thinly sliced red onion
  • Shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Substitutions

  • Ground beef: 85/15 works if you prefer slightly leaner meat; ground turkey can be used as a lean alternative.
  • Onion: Yellow or white onions work in place of red.
  • Sweet pickle relish: Finely chopped sweet pickles are a fine substitute.
  • Sour cream: Plain yogurt can replace sour cream for a lighter sauce.
  • Lettuce: Romaine or mixed salad greens are good alternatives.
  • Pickles and tomatoes: Use pickle chips or diced tomatoes based on preference.

  1. Step 4: Assemble the bowls: divide chopped lettuce among four large bowls. Top each with one-quarter of the cheeseburger pieces, pickles, tomatoes, red onion and shredded cheddar. Drizzle with special sauce to taste.

Expert tip

Let the burgers rest before cutting. Allow cooked patties to rest for about 5 minutes before slicing into bite-sized pieces. Resting lets the juices redistribute, keeps the meat moist and allows carryover cooking to finish the patties without drying them out.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Big Mac Bowl healthy?

Compared to a traditional Big Mac with a bun, the bowl is essentially a large salad topped with seasoned beef and cheese, so it is typically a healthier option. To keep it lighter, use the special sauce sparingly and reduce the shredded cheese if desired.

Do you have to make individual burgers?

No. You can also cook crumbled ground beef with onions and seasonings, then divide the cooked meat between bowls. Making individual patties gives you those satisfying bite-sized cheeseburger pieces, but both methods work well.

Can Big Mac Bowls be made ahead?

Yes. Cook the burgers and prepare the sauce, then chop the salad ingredients. Store components in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to three days. Keep the sauce separate until serving to prevent the lettuce from wilting.

Equipment

  • Large skillet or cast iron pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Chef’s knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • For the cheeseburgers
  • 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • For the Big Mac special sauce
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • For the bowls
  • 1 large head iceberg lettuce, chopped (about 12 cups)
  • 1 cup chopped dill pickles
  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, kosher salt and black pepper. Gently form into four even patties.
  2. Heat a skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat and add the butter. When it melts, add the patties. Cook 3–4 minutes per side, or until the desired doneness. During the last minute, top each patty with a slice of American cheese and cover the pan briefly to melt the cheese. Transfer burgers to a cutting board and let rest about 5 minutes, then cut into bite-sized pieces.
  3. While the burgers cook, make the special sauce: in a small bowl stir together mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish and sour cream. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Set aside.
  4. To assemble, divide the chopped lettuce among four large shallow bowls (about 3 cups per bowl). Top each bowl with one-quarter of the cheeseburger pieces, pickles, tomatoes, red onion and shredded cheddar. Drizzle with the Big Mac special sauce — start with a small amount and add more to taste.
  5. Serve immediately. Optionally toss to combine and enjoy as a Big Mac–style salad.

Notes

Make ahead: This recipe is excellent for meal prep. Cook the burgers and prepare the sauce in advance. Chop the vegetables and store components in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to three days. Keep the sauce separate until ready to serve.

Protein option: If you prefer, cook crumbled ground beef with onions and seasonings instead of making individual patties. Divide the cooked meat among bowls.
