It’s pumpkin season, and there’s no reason to leave your best friend out of the tasty fun. Pumpkin is nutritious for most dogs, and my crew loves it.
Making a simple vegan dog treat is easy. These Pumpkin Cranberry Dog Cookies bring a bit of autumn to your pup’s bowl.
This is when Brenna was doing chemo a few years ago. She did great through it all and is still with us years later <3

Be warned: dogs quickly learn that anything baked in your kitchen could be for them.

Who Is the Cute Dog in the Photo?
Brenna is our lab mix, now nearly 14 years old, and she’s a cookie lover. She’s an optimist — whenever I bake, she assumes the batch is hers.
You may notice the shaved patch on her leg. In October 2016 she was diagnosed with lymphoma and began treatment. It’s been a long road, but she responded well to a later protocol that uses oral medication instead of injections, which made treatments easier for her.
She’s more playful and mischievous again, which is the best sign that she’s feeling better.
Update: Brenna has been in remission for about six months and is doing well. She’s a bit of an oldster now, but still runs the household!

While she was being treated it was impossible not to spoil her a little, but I still tried to keep treats wholesome. If a cookie can include oats, coconut oil, pumpkin, whole wheat, and cranberries, that’s a win in my book.
Substitutions for the Pumpkin Cranberry Dog Cookies
Feel free to experiment with flavors. Applesauce can replace pumpkin puree, or try blueberries instead of cranberries. The key is keeping the dough the texture of soft, workable clay so the baking time and technique remain the same.

How Long Do Homemade Vegan Dog Treats Last?
Drying the cookies well during baking helps them store longer without refrigeration. If they remain moist after baking, store them in the refrigerator or freezer to prevent mold.

Pumpkin Cranberry Dog Cookies
20 minutes
20 minutes
Ingredients
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup fresh cranberries
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup ground flax seed mixed with 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 4 cups rolled oats
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 cups brown rice flour, or additional whole wheat flour
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare baking trays with parchment paper or lightly oil them.
- Add the ginger and water to a blender and blend until smooth. Add the cranberries and blend until they are broken into small pieces.
- Combine the ginger-cranberry mixture with pumpkin puree, the flax mixture, melted coconut oil, and cinnamon. Mix well.
- Stir in the oats, then add the whole wheat flour and baking soda and mix. Add the brown rice flour a cup at a time until the dough is thick and moldable, like wet clay. (You can substitute extra whole wheat flour for the brown rice flour.)
- Lightly flour a large cutting board. Take about one-quarter of the dough and roll it out. Use cookie cutters to cut shapes and place them on the prepared baking tray.
- Repeat until all the dough is shaped.
- Bake 15 to 20 minutes, depending on cookie size. The goal is a very dry texture so the cookies store well without burning.
