Sunday in Hout Bay: Top Things to See, Do & Eat

A couple of weeks ago my fiancé and I drove down to Hout Bay for the first time. The drive itself was striking — winding roads framed by tall, pine-like trees gave parts of the route an Oregon-like feel rather than the more familiar beachside look of Cape Town. The town is compact, charming and pleasant to explore by car.

After circling the parking area a few times we finally found a spot and made our way to the beach. At first glance Hout Bay is lovely: a sheltered cove with steep cliffs on most sides and calm, turquoise water. We began walking along the sand and, sadly, noticed it was one of the dirtiest beaches we’ve visited. There was a lot of litter and, unfortunately, numerous dog droppings. I managed to step in some and didn’t realize it until we were back in the car.

Signs along the shoreline warned against swimming because of water pollution, which was disappointing. The bay’s water looked so inviting — clear and calm — but the advisories made it clear the area needs better environmental care. Still, a few dogs and a handful of determined swimmers ignored the warnings and went in.

Despite these disappointments, the setting remains beautiful. The marina adds interest and activity to the scene, with fishing boats and yachts set against the backdrop of rugged cliffs and open sky.

Hout Bay offers more than just a stretch of sand. There are several seafood restaurants — one in particular made me regret having already eaten — small shops to poke around in, and a cozy ice cream shop perfect for a warm afternoon. These conveniences make it a nice spot for a relaxed outing, even if swimming isn’t advisable at the moment.

Overall, it was an enjoyable day trip. The landscape, the harbor and the seaside eateries are all worth experiencing. My main hope is that the beach receives more attention to cleanliness and pollution control so it can be enjoyed safely by more visitors. Hout Bay is an attractive place and deserves care that matches its natural beauty.
