Homemade Christmas Dryer Ball Spray for Festive Laundry

Have you switched to dryer balls yet? I used dryer sheets for years, but switching to wool dryer balls changed my laundry routine for the better.

Wool dryer balls contain none of the toxic chemicals found in many dryer sheets, cost a fraction of the ongoing price of disposable products, and can reduce drying time — which saves energy and money.

You can make dryer balls from yarn and old nylons, or buy ready-made wool dryer balls. I enjoy many DIY projects, but preferring convenience, I buy mine. What I do love to make is a scented dryer ball spray. It’s simple: water, witch hazel, and essential oils in a spray bottle. That’s it.

What Are Dryer Balls & What Do They Do?

Dryer balls are felted wool spheres, roughly the size of a tennis ball, that you toss into the dryer with wet clothes.

  • They tumble with laundry, creating pockets of air that help clothes dry faster — often up to about 25% faster — saving time and energy.
  • Because items move more freely, clothing tends to come out with fewer wrinkles.
  • Dryer balls soften fabric by smoothing fibers, giving noticeably softer garments.
  • When lightly scented with essential oils, dryer balls add a gentle fragrance without the chemicals found in many dryer sheets.
  • Used correctly, dryer balls can also help reduce static cling.

How Do You Scent Wool Dryer Balls?

Dropping undiluted essential oils directly onto each ball works, but it can waste oil. Two drops per ball add up quickly for frequent laundry — often consuming multiple bottles per month for busy households. A more economical option is a simple DIY spray to scent the balls before use.

What Is Dryer Ball Spray & Why Use It?

Dryer ball spray is a diluted mixture of water, witch hazel, and essential oil, applied to wool dryer balls before the dryer cycle. Benefits include:

  • The light moisture helps reduce static cling and wrinkles.
  • Dilution makes essential oils go further, so the scent lasts without excessive oil use.
  • You can blend oils to create customized scents appropriate for any season or preference.

What You Need to Make Dryer Ball Spray

  • 4 oz spray bottle

  • small funnel

  • witch hazel

  • essential oil or blend of essential oils

  • distilled water

How to Make Dryer Ball Spray

Step 1: Add 2 tablespoons witch hazel to a 4 oz spray bottle

Tip: Choose a bottle compatible with diluted essential oils — glass, stainless steel, or certain plastics (PET or HDPE) work well. A small funnel helps prevent spills.

Step 3: Fill the bottle with distilled water

Tip: Boiled and cooled filtered water can be used instead of distilled. Leave a little space at the top so the sprayer can be reattached without overflow.

Step 5 (optional): Add a label

Print a label on regular paper and secure it with packing tape for durability, or use label paper. Packing tape helps protect the label and keeps it looking neat longer.

How to Use Wool Dryer Balls with Dryer Ball Spray

  • Optional for dry climates: soak dryer balls briefly and squeeze out excess water to add humidity that reduces static. Skip this if your home humidity is normal.
  • Place wet clothes into the dryer.
  • Attach a safety pin to a couple of the wool dryer balls to help discharge static.
  • Spray the dryer balls several times with the spray mixture.
  • Add the dryer balls to the load: small load = 2 balls, average load = 4 balls, large load = 6 balls.
  • Remove clothes when they are slightly damp or just barely dry to avoid over-drying, which increases static.

How to Reduce Static Cling Naturally

Dryer balls reduce static but may not eliminate it completely. Additional tips:

  • Use vinegar as a fabric softener — it keeps fibers soft, reducing friction and static.
  • Use wool dryer balls to maintain a slightly more humid dryer environment and reduce drying time.
  • Soak and wring dryer balls before use in very dry conditions to add humidity.
  • Pin a safety pin to a couple of dryer balls to help discharge electricity.
  • If you didn’t soak the balls, add a damp rag to the dryer about 5 minutes before the cycle ends.
  • Reduce dryer time; over-drying increases static.
  • Separate synthetic fabrics (nylon, polyester) from natural fibers to limit static buildup, or air-dry synthetics when possible.
  • For persistently problematic garments, hang them to dry instead of using the dryer.

If already-dry clothes have static:

  • Spray lightly with water to add moisture and reduce static.
  • Use a humidifier to increase home humidity.
  • Moisturize skin before dressing to help break static on exposed skin areas.
