Creamy Vegan Blood Orange Frozen Yogurt Recipe

Blood orange frozen yogurt

This vegan blood orange frozen yogurt is simple, refreshing, and full of bright citrus flavor. While blood oranges give this frozen yogurt its stunning color and naturally sweet flavor, you can easily make this recipe with any citrus fruit you prefer. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes, and pomelos all work — just adjust the sweetener to balance tartness. This recipe highlights how versatile creamy citrus desserts can be: light, vibrant, and satisfying without being heavy.

Growing up in South Florida meant being surrounded by citrus groves and fresh fruit sold locally. Those memories inspired this creamy frozen yogurt, which brings the lively taste of citrus into a dairy-free format. Citrus-flavored creamy desserts are surprisingly rare compared with sorbets, so this is a great option when you want a soft, scoopable treat with a fresh, tangy profile. It’s also naturally gluten-free and simple to adapt to refined-sugar-free diets.

The process is mostly hands-off. The active time is minimal: about five to ten minutes of blending. The longer stand time is freezing the fruit before processing and re-freezing the finished mixture to firm up. If you plan ahead and freeze the citrus segments, you can have a bright, scoopable dessert in a few hours that feels indulgent but is made from just a few wholesome ingredients.

This recipe is ideal for summer afternoons, entertaining, or anytime you want a healthier but delicious frozen treat. Use a plain or lightly sweetened vegan yogurt if you prefer less sugar, or choose a flavored variety to add complexity. Coconut, almond, or soy yogurts all make excellent dairy-free bases; each will slightly change the texture and flavor, so pick the one you like best.

Vegan Blood Orange Frozen Yogurt

Creamy, citrus-forward frozen yogurt made with blood oranges and a dairy-free yogurt base. Simple ingredients and easy to prepare.

Serves

6

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups blood oranges, or other citrus of choice, peeled and segmented
  2. 2 tablespoons agave nectar (adjust to taste)
  3. 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  4. 1/2 cup vegan yogurt (any dairy-free yogurt; coconut, almond, or soy)

Instructions

  1. Peel and segment the oranges (or chosen citrus). Remove seeds and any large pith for a smoother texture.
  2. Place the segments in a single layer in a plastic or glass container and freeze for at least 2 hours, until solid.
  3. Once frozen, add the citrus segments, agave, lemon juice, and vegan yogurt to a food processor or high-speed blender. Blend on high until completely smooth and creamy; this may take 5–10 minutes depending on your machine. Pause and scrape down the sides as needed.
  4. Transfer the blended mixture to a lidded container and freeze again for at least 2 hours or until firm enough to scoop.
  5. Scoop and serve directly from the freezer. Keep stored in an airtight container to prevent freezer burn.

Notes

  • If using very tart citrus like lemon, lime, or grapefruit, increase the agave to taste.
  • Choose plain yogurt for a lower-sugar option, or a flavored yogurt (for example peach) to complement the citrus flavors.
  • Different vegan yogurts affect texture: coconut yogurt can make it richer, while almond or soy will be lighter.
  • Store in a container with a tight-fitting lid to maintain texture and prevent freezer burn.

Tips for best results: Use fully ripe, sweet blood oranges for the most vibrant color and natural sweetness. Freeze the fruit thoroughly before processing to achieve a smooth, creamy texture. If the mixture is too firm after the final freeze, let it sit at room temperature for 5–10 minutes before scooping to soften slightly.
