Cream Cheese and Jam French Toast Recipe for Brunch

A simple twist on classic French toast: cream cheese and jam sandwiched between egg-coated bread for a sweet, comforting breakfast or brunch.

Cream cheese and jam French toast is an indulgent but economical way to transform simple pantry staples into a special breakfast. It’s ideal for using up slightly stale bread and works well with fresh berries if you have them on hand.

French toast is both frugal and a little bit fancy — perfect for weekday mornings or a relaxed weekend brunch. Keep a tub of spreadable cream cheese in the fridge for quick breakfasts, snacks, or baking projects like cheesecakes and cakes.

Ingredients

Ingredients

bread
eggs
milk
butter (for frying)
cream cheese
jam
berries (optional)
icing sugar (optional)

In the photos raspberry jam is used, but feel free to swap in your favourite — apricot, plum, or even marmalade will each give a different character to the finished dish.

How to make Cream Cheese and Jam French Toast

Step 1 – Warm a frying pan over medium heat.

Step 2 – Whisk the egg and milk together in a shallow bowl until combined.

Step 3 – Spread two slices of bread with cream cheese. On one of those slices spread jam over the cream cheese, then sandwich the slices together.

Step 4 – Dip the sandwich into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Let it soak for a few seconds; thicker or stale bread can be left to soak a little longer so it absorbs more of the mixture.

Step 5 – Melt some butter in the pan and fry the sandwich gently until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side. Be careful when flipping — the sandwich can be soft and the filling will become very hot.

Serve dusted with icing sugar if you like, and top with fresh berries for color and extra freshness.

Substitutions, Freezing, and Reheating Tips

If you need to adapt the recipe, you can use gluten-free bread and swap in a plant-based milk such as soy or almond. This recipe depends on eggs for the coating, so replacing them is more difficult without changing the technique.

Cooked French toast freezes well. Arrange cooked pieces on a baking tray lined with baking paper and freeze until firm, then transfer to a zip-lock bag. Freeze for up to three months.

Reheat from frozen in an air fryer, oven, toaster, or under a grill/broiler until heated through and crisp again.

  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 Tbsp. butter for frying

  • 4 Tbsp. cream cheese
  • 1 Tbsp. icing sugar (optional)

Instructions

  5. Dip the sandwich into the egg mixture and let it soak for a few seconds on each side, longer for thicker bread.
  6. Fry gently for 2–3 minutes per side until golden, taking care when flipping so the sandwich doesn’t fall apart.
  7. Add more butter and repeat with the remaining sandwich.
  8. Cut into halves or quarters and dust with icing sugar if desired. Serve with berries if you like.

Notes

Light cream cheese works well and reduces calories. For more fruit, spread sliced strawberries or raspberries on top of the jam before cooking.
