Turn tall white dollar-store candle jars into patriotic decorations for your holiday display. This simple project uses inexpensive candles, adhesive vinyl in red and blue, and twine to create Americana-themed accents for a mantel, table, or entryway.
Decorative candles are an easy, affordable way to add seasonal style to your home. Plain jar candles from discount stores become festive with a few vinyl decals or stickers, and a set of three coordinated jars makes a polished statement without much effort.
For these candles I chose three complementary designs: a small American-flag motif on one jar using red and blue vinyl, vertically placed “USA” letters surrounded by tiny stars on the second, and a fireworks-inspired pattern for the third. I applied each design to the front of the jar, though you can wrap the decals fully around the jar if you prefer a 360-degree look for a centerpiece or tablescape.

- An electronic cutting machine (such as a Cricut) or craft punches

Step-by-step: Make patriotic candle jars
- Choose or create designs. You can select patriotic SVG files from a craft library or design your own. For these jars the flag and the vertical “USA” were sized about 1.5 × 7 inches; fireworks can be cut in a variety of smaller sizes to fit around the jar.
- Place adhesive vinyl on your cutting mat and cut the designs using your machine or cut shapes by hand if using punches.
- Weed away the excess vinyl, then use clear transfer tape to lift and apply each design to the candle jar. Smooth the decal gently to remove air bubbles and ensure good adhesion.
- Finish each jar by wrapping twine around the top for texture and a handmade look. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting. Important: if you’ll burn the candles, keep twine, ribbon, or any flammable trim well away from the flame and monitor lit candles at all times.
No cutting machine? Try these alternatives
- Craft punches are an excellent substitute for a cutting machine. Punch stars and other small shapes from adhesive vinyl in red, white, and blue, then arrange them on the jars. Create a flag look by layering red vinyl strips and adding a block of blue with punched stars.
- Letter stickers can recreate the vertical “USA” design without cutting vinyl. Surround the letters with small punched stars or store-bought star stickers to complete the look.
