Edamame Hummus is a rich, creamy dip ideal for serving with vegetables, crackers, or chips. This easy Trader Joe’s copycat recipe is perfect for parties or snacks.

When I lived near a Trader Joe’s and a Barnes & Noble in LA, my partner and I would browse books and then explore the grocery store. On one visit I discovered edamame hummus — something I hadn’t tried before. It was delicious, so I adapted my classic hummus base, swapping chickpeas for shelled edamame kernels. The result was a bright, tasty dip that quickly became a favorite and earned a place in my recipe notebook.
About Edamame Hummus
Edamame Hummus is a vibrant green dip made from edamame (young soybeans). It’s commonly found at Trader Joe’s, but making it at home is more economical and often tastier than store-bought tubs.
This vegan, gluten-free dip comes together in under five minutes when you use pre-cooked or thawed edamame. It has a creamy texture with a fresh, lemony, slightly earthy flavor. Use it as a party dip, a sandwich spread, or a healthy snack with pita, crackers, or raw vegetables.
Ingredients
Edamame – Use fresh or frozen shelled edamame kernels. If frozen, thaw them under cold running water in a colander. If using fresh in pods, shell and cook the beans until tender, then drain and cool.
Garlic – Use one clove for a mild garlic flavor; add more if you prefer a stronger taste.
Extra virgin olive oil – Use a good-quality EVOO. You can substitute sesame oil for a nuttier flavor if desired.
Tahini – Store-bought or homemade tahini works well. If you’re short on time, toasted sesame seeds can be added while blending. Tahini can be swapped for almond or peanut butter for a different flavor profile.
Cilantro – Adds a bright, fresh note and enhances the green color.
Lime juice – Freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice adds brightness and a pleasant tang.
How To Make Hummus Using Edamame Beans
Preparation
If using fresh edamame in pods, shell them and cook the kernels in boiling water until tender, then drain and cool. If using frozen shelled edamame, rinse under cold water and drain. Peel the garlic, juice the lime (or lemon), and gather the remaining ingredients.
Make The Hummus
In the bowl of a food processor or a high-powered blender, combine the following:
- 1 cup shelled edamame kernels
- 1 garlic clove, peeled
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup tahini
- 2 tablespoons cilantro
- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

Process for about 1 1/2 minutes, stopping to scrape down the bowl as needed until smooth. If the hummus is too thick or coarse, run the processor while drizzling in 1–2 tablespoons of chilled water until you reach the desired consistency. Taste and adjust salt if necessary.
Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl, drizzle lightly with extra virgin olive oil, and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and a few edamame kernels. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Variations
No tahini: Omit tahini or substitute with peanut butter or almond butter for a different flavor and texture.
No oil: Skip the olive oil and use a little cold water to adjust consistency.
Wasabi twist: Add a pinch of wasabi powder for a subtle heat and pungency.
You can also blend in roasted red peppers, cooked beets, or avocado for colorful and flavorful variations.
