Cozy chicken soups, every kind of potato, warm breakfasts, and anything steamy and cheesy — that’s my winter food mood. Below are my favorite winter recipes to inspire your next meal plan, with ideas for breakfast, casseroles, soups, and hearty dinners.

Winter is ideal for make-ahead meals. Soups, stews, and casseroles often improve as leftovers, and many dishes freeze well, so you can cook once and enjoy multiple meals. These recipes are curated to make planning and prepping easier during chilly months.
Sometimes you need a nudge in the right direction—a soup atlas, a casserole compass, a warm-food heading. Consider this list that nudge. Welcome!
Here’s what all my Favorite Winter Recipes have in common:
-
All of these recipes are served hot, which is my top pick for the cold season.
-
They’re comfort food in varying degrees — from maple brown sugar oatmeal to Jojo potato wedges — many of them taste like childhood favorites.
-
Ingredients are easy to find and often feature winter produce like squash or staples for chicken soup.
Here are some of my favorite tools for winter cooking:
The tools for winter cooking aren’t radically different from other seasons, but a few pieces stand out because they make soups, stews, and roast dinners so much easier. Three of these can even hold soup — you get the idea.
-
Instant Pot — Ideal for fast soups and shredded chicken, great for make-ahead meals.
-
Air Fryer — Perfect for crispy potatoes and quick sides; handy for reheating without a microwave.
-
Dutch Oven — The workhorse for braises, soups, and one-pot dinners.
-
Souper Cubes — Excellent for freezing individual portions of soups and sauces for later.

No microwave? No problem!
If you don’t have a microwave, other appliances work great for reheating leftovers — stovetop, oven, air fryer, or Instant Pot all do the job and often give better texture than a microwave.
How to start meal planning:
Begin by focusing on one meal each week, like dinner. Keep it simple and build a system that fits your life. Here’s a quick plan to get started:
-
Set aside time to plan before the week begins.
-
Consider who you’re cooking for and get their input.
-
Check your calendar and the weather so you plan realistically.
-
Use what’s already in your fridge and pantry to avoid waste.
-
Leave space for leftovers or a flexible “wildcard” night.
Meal planning looks different for everyone — some use apps, others prefer a laminated sheet and dry-erase marker, or a simple phone note. The only way to find what works is to try a method and adjust as you learn what fits your routine.

Things this list of Winter Recipes is missing:
This collection highlights favorites, but I still enjoy salads and seasonal produce in winter. Here are a few types of winter recipes I don’t feature here but that are worth trying: hearty winter salads with raw cruciferous greens and apples, ultra-creamy potato soups, classic chicken Marsala, and shepherd’s pie made with leftover roast beef. These styles expand your winter menu beyond soups and casseroles.
