The PTO hit the road—literally. They imagined an RV tour around town and brought that adventure into the school for Teacher Appreciation Week. Donations poured in from local businesses and parents: massages, gift cards, restaurant meals, weekend getaways and more. Every staff member received a prize, many bundled together, without the PTO having to spend large sums. The secret was asking broadly and confidently—reach out to businesses and families; a polite “no” is harmless, but many will say “yes.”
Before describing the details, picture the scene: teachers walking through a hallway that greets them with the sounds of crickets and nature. Giant trees and wildlife silhouettes set the mood. Soon they notice a dock and deep blue water with fishing poles, an airplane towing a banner, and a life-size camper—each detail part of an immersive camping-and-road-trip theme.
The camping theme tied to practical logistics: a local college offered to grill hamburgers and hot dogs, so the PTO centered the decorations around all-American meals. Over the week the staff enjoyed a catfish lunch, a down-home breakfast, a classic BBQ, and a fried chicken meal provided by the principals. Catering from local eateries with discounts helped keep costs down.
Many decorations were DIY. Trees and animals were traced from worksheets using an overhead projector onto large rolls of paper, cut out, and outlined with markers. Nature soundtracks added atmosphere. Props like a boat dock and greenery were purchased affordably, while leftover blue fabric from a previous event became the water. Volunteers contributed items they already had—fishing poles, a toy airplane, tires—so the display evolved organically as people brought ideas and materials.
A whimsical airplane banner read, “Life is a Journey and Teachers Hold the Key to the Map.” Letters were cut from state maps using a Cricut, and the PTO obtained free state maps by mail—an inexpensive, thematic detail. A raft feature included cutouts of the principals’ faces for a playful touch. The camper display began as a small mock-up; the team then scaled it up by layering paper, cutting a life-size shape, outlining with marker, and adding black duct tape accents. A real tire, folding chairs and repurposed items completed the scene.
This overall hallway view showed the coordinated theme and explained why the PTO chose it: it paired perfectly with the meals and created a warm, celebratory environment for staff passing through each day.
Inside the teacher lounge the team posted an itinerary and a raffle ticket map pocket on the wall. Teachers received forms in advance via email and in their mailboxes so they knew the week’s schedule. Each day’s activities were printed on separate sheets and tucked into a map-themed pocket along with raffle tickets.
Small details enhanced the camping feel: “Don’t Feed the Bears” signs and lanterns created a cozy atmosphere. One table featured s’mores: terracotta pots filled with gravel held Sternos so teachers could roast marshmallows safely indoors. Branches with string lights hung from the ceiling, while layered tablecloths, burlap runners and wooden disks completed the rustic look.
The PTO also coordinated classroom surprises: supply donation forms went home with students, and donated school supplies were placed in teachers’ rooms so they found a helpful surprise when they arrived. A printable writing prompt sent home encouraged students to share appreciation notes for their teachers, creating heartfelt keepsakes.
One popular surprise was a large drink donation from Sonic—50 large drinks delivered midweek. The PTO created a printable order form for teachers to claim their drinks, which added a fun midday treat. Other donated prizes included gift baskets, facials, oil changes and golf outings—enough that many gifts were combined into attractive bundles.
Teacher Appreciation Week was a highlight for the PTO and the school community. With creativity, collaboration and outreach to local businesses and families, the organizers created a memorable, budget-friendly celebration that honored staff and boosted morale. The effort shows how small contributions and volunteers’ enthusiasm can combine into a big, meaningful week for the educators who give so much.
